So, you know my stance on breakfast and weekends. You eat cereal on the weekdays, so I enjoy stretching my culinary muscles on the weekend. So, seeing as it's been eons since I last made pancakes.. all of two weeks... but I decided to make them.

John was with Dad collecting a car from Shannon airport, so I made pancakes for John. When measuring out ingredients, I accidentally put in about 1/4 too much flour. I just shrugged my shoulders and said "ah it'll be grand"

And wow. Was it grand. Was it excellent? Why yes, yes it was.

Calling the pancakes that were created from that batter "crunchy" would be the wrong word, it was more..thicker. It had more bite to it, literally :) John described them as "viscous". Nice word..

of a glutinous nature or consistency; sticky; thick; adhesive.

I'm sorry to say I got no pictures, but how can you gauge texture from a picture?

In science today, we were talking about measuring things in foods, like protein and starch. We also discussed how to measure sugar in things. We talked mainly about two kinds; glucose and normal, granulated sugar.

Science Teacher: Glucose is in energy drinks like Lucosade and granulated sugar you use in...

Me: Pancakes!!

Science Teacher: Tommy, are you alright?

I'm telling ya....

While I try to keep this blog subject-neutral, it's inevitable that some pancake posts are going to slip in. While I edit my 40 minutes of footage that I shot on Friday, and try and turn that into a 6-8 instructional video, I'd like to reflect on something I realised.

My brother and pancakes are similar

When cooking pancakes, you pour the mixture out onto the pan, and wait 2-3 minutes before they turn golden-brown (in one of my takes cooking a pancake, I'm 90% sure I accidentally said "Gordon Brown". So, yes, cook pancakes until they look like Gordon Brown). The similarity isn't here, however. It's when you go to turn it.

What I do, is when it's 80% done, I start peeling the edges up, in anticipation of what is to happen (i.e turning it), to make sure it doesn't break. Kind of saying "Yes, I'm sorry it has to be this way, but yes, you do have to be turned. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry". This is where I find the similarity.

When waking my brother up, the trick is to go into his room, turn on the light and shout "get up!" in a loud voice about 15 minutes before he actually should be up.

You can kind of see how they are the same, don't you? :P

I was told by Olivia that I should make one of those cooking videos on making stuff, to show the masses how to make them. She told me my macbook would be fine for recording it. Where'd I upload it? Youtube don't allow vids over 10 minutes (which I'd imagine would be too short to make one pancake start to finish). Any other video hosting sites out there that would be easy to use and easy to but on here? Anything I should know about cooking and cameras?

In other news...

1) Young Scientist proposal is going great. Am also 3/4 finished the page proposal I need to send off to the folks at the RDS. It'll get finished tonight and I'll post it here when I get it done. It's currently 3 pages long and needs a haircut.

2) Really looking forward to the Irish Web Awards on the 11th. :D

3) You gotta love the creativity of some...

Could I honestly call it anything else?

So, since I'm pressed-for-time in the weekday mornings, I only have cereal, and so I like having something big and extravagant -and, inevitably- unhealthy. I usually end up having either pancakes or a fry up. Since I hadn't had pancakes for quite a long time, I decided to make some.

1. The mixture. Notice the liquid consistency. No lumps

2. Putting the mixture on a pan on the aga.

3. A blurry shot of the pancakes on the pan

4. A clearer shot of the 'cake on the pan

5. The finished product with raspberries and icing sugar

6. Of course, we do specials for those who want them, and Jay wanted one with peanut butter. Ask and you shall receive...
