Here follows my thoughts on Religion. I tried not to bash other religions, but I wholeheartedly disagree with it all and if you get seriously pissed off at people disagreeing with your beliefs, don't read on..
_____
As I sat in Religion class with nothing to do, I started to think about it. Why do people set so much store by religions? Why is it such as big part of people's daily lives? When somebody jumps out at you from behind, you yell "Jesus you scared me!" or when the missing three year old is found, people can be heard Thank the lord!-ing.
In my opinion, religion provides comfort. When someone dies, you find comfort in thinking that they're somewhere happy (predominantly in Ireland, it's somewhere with clouds and pearly gates) and when you're alone after an argument with someone, you find solace in the fact there is a being that's there 24/7.
I've been atheist for some time. I remember when I was 7/8, standing at the sink one night, toothbrush in mouth and thinking about how it makes no sense. Each and every day, there's news of poverty and death and destruction. Now, surely God wouldn't allow that to happen to the world he created.
Why does God allow people to be born with defects? How come people are born autistic, with only one ear or with Cerebral Palsy? I mean, they say life is hard, but these things don't exactly make it easier!
I think that part of my atheism stems from just that. If God existed, why was I born with CP? Why impart the burden? Pro-Catholics would argue that conception doesn't have anything to do with God, but humans supposedly came from God, so why couldn't he fix something?
Now, we've all heard the radio ads, we've seen the ads. Smoking and drinking alcohol are big no-no's when it comes to pregnancy, as it can cause complications in the baby. Pro-catholics could talk about this and how God has no control over this. But we come back to the fact that God created the world. At first, there was nothing. On which of the 7 days did germs and bad things come into play?
I feel that if God exists, he's given me and millions of others a large kick in the teeth.

Although I'm an atheist as well, I disagreed with much of your post while still finding it interesting. You point out that some people are born with CP (like you), and God shouldn't allow that. However, I think that God (if he exists, which I doubt) should allow things like that to happen, because otherwise we would live in a very boring world (no offence, mate), in which medicine would lose its importance. A much more valid argument would be IMO:
why are people killing each other all over the world? How did God allow the Holocaust to happen? Why do most scums spend their lives in big mansions, while some very decent people are getting robbed, or even shoot themselves to be freed from the misery?
The human factor is much more important, since we are supposed to be Gods most important creation (which is bullsh*t, BTW).

“Now, surely God wouldn't allow that to happen to the world he created.”
Hmm, you seem to possess an interesting way of thinking.
“There is pain and suffering in the world - therefore no God exists.”
Does that actually seem like a logical flow of reasoning to you?
Or, I don't like the way that God goes about His business - therefore no God exists.
I can understand your being upset with your lot in life but to declare that it's proof that God doesn't exist is a bit of a stretch.

@makarios I'm not using this as a rant space, and of course there are better and more logical arguments, such as the ones that Paul mentioned, but I talked about this because it's on a personal level.
"“There is pain and suffering in the world - therefore no God exists.”
Does that actually seem like a logical flow of reasoning to you? "
Would god actually allow such things as the Holocaust to happen. What about divine intervention and all that?
What do you mean by "interesting way of thinking"? I feel that since god supposedly created this world, why is he standing back and allowing all this to happen?

If something with omnipotent power would allow lesser beings to suffer then it sounds like this creator of all things sees the human race as lab rats he can have fun with.
Why would a God not intervene to help? How perverse is this creature to do that? We as humans water our bloody plants and feed the birds and even take care of injured wild animals. To think as we evolve we'd become cold and uncaring seems rather odd.
